Discover one of São Miguel’s best-kept secrets—the breathtaking landscapes of Nordeste, a region of untouched nature, dramatic cliffs, and lush mountains, making it a true paradise for off-road adventures. This tour takes you through spectacular viewpoints, remote trails, and hidden waterfalls, offering an unforgettable journey through the island’s wildest landscapes.
Furnas Crater & Povoação – Off-Road Adventure Begins
Our adventure begins at the Salto do Cavalo viewpoint, the highest point of the Furnas crater, where you’ll be treated to panoramic views over Furnas, Povoação, and, on clear days, the distant island of Santa Maria.
Descending towards Povoação, the oldest settlement on the island, we switch to off-road trails, crossing water streams and rugged dirt paths in our 4×4 jeep, creating a thrilling experience surrounded by raw Azorean nature.
As we continue, we traverse enchanting forest trails, where iconic Japanese hydrangeas and towering plane trees, over 100 years old, create a mesmerizing tunnel of greenery.
Tronqueira & Pico Bartolomeu – The Wild Heart of São Miguel
Next, we enter the Serra da Tronqueira, a protected habitat for endemic species, where the landscape is dominated by dense, misty forests and vibrant green valleys. This region is home to Pico da Vara, the highest peak on São Miguel, offering a glimpse into the island’s untamed wilderness.
We then ascend to Pico Bartolomeu, one of the highest points on the island, where the breathtaking landscapes stretch as far as the eye can see, making it a perfect stop for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts.
Nordeste – A Historic & Scenic Escape
Arriving in the charming village of Nordeste, we take time to explore its historic center, known for its traditional Azorean architecture and quiet, picturesque streets. Here, we enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, taking in the tranquility of this remote corner of São Miguel.
The North Coast – Spectacular Viewpoints & Natural Wonders
The afternoon takes us along the north coast, where we stop at some of the island’s most breathtaking viewpoints:
- Ponta do Sossego & Ponta da Madrugada – Known as the best sunrise spots on the island, these viewpoints are adorned with colorful flowers and surrounded by lush nature, offering a peaceful retreat with endless ocean views.
- Vigia dos Barcos Viewpoint – Overlooking one of the island’s oldest fishing ports, this spot provides a unique perspective on the maritime traditions of São Miguel.
- Vigia das Baleias in Algarvia – Once used for whale spotting during the whaling era, this viewpoint is a reminder of the island’s past, now offering a stunning view over the vast Atlantic Ocean.
We also have the option to visit the Priolo Environmental Center, where you can take a guided tour to learn about conservation efforts for the Priolo (Azores Bullfinch), one of the rarest birds in Europe, found only in this part of the island.
Ribeira dos Caldeirões – Waterfalls & Windmills
Before heading back to Ponta Delgada, we stop at the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, one of the most magical places on the island. Here, you’ll find cascading waterfalls, historic watermills, and lush vegetation, making it a perfect place to immerse yourself in São Miguel’s natural beauty.
A Journey to Remember
As we make our way back to Ponta Delgada, we reflect on a day filled with stunning landscapes, thrilling off-road trails, and the untouched beauty of Nordeste. This tour is perfect for those seeking an authentic adventure through one of São Miguel’s most spectacular and less-explored regions, ensuring memories that will last a lifetime.
