Experience the geological marvels of Furnas, one of São Miguel’s most fascinating destinations. This tour will take you through volcanic landscapes, bubbling fumaroles, lush botanical gardens, and natural hot springs, offering a perfect blend of nature, culture, and gastronomy.
Our journey begins along the south coast, where we admire the volcanic beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic. Our first stop is the bathing area of Caloura, a picturesque fishing village renowned for its fresh seafood and scenic coastline.
We then continue to Vila Franca do Campo, the first capital of São Miguel, where you’ll witness the famous Vila Franca Islet—a volcanic crater turned natural swimming lagoon, classified as a Protected Habitat Area. This stunning location, covered in endemic vegetation, is also the stage for the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition.
Before heading to Furnas, we visit the Nossa Senhora da Paz viewpoint, a serene hilltop sanctuary offering a panoramic view of Vila Franca do Campo and its majestic islet—a breathtaking sight that captures the beauty of the Azorean coastline.
Entering the heart of the Furnas Volcano, we arrive at Lagoa das Furnas, where one of São Miguel’s most iconic traditional dishes is prepared—Cozido das Furnas.
This unique volcanic stew is a flavorful mix of beef, pork, chicken, chorizo, black pudding, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, cabbage, kale, and yams, slow-cooked underground using the natural heat of the Furnas caldera for six hours. After witnessing the cooking process, you’ll have the opportunity to taste this delicious dish at a local restaurant.
After lunch, we explore some of Furnas’ most famous attractions, with the option to visit:
Before leaving Furnas, we make a stop at the Pico do Ferro viewpoint, offering a breathtaking view over the Furnas caldera, where you can admire the vast volcanic landscape from above.
Continuing towards the north coast, we visit the only tea plantation in Europe, where you’ll have the chance to taste freshly brewed Azorean tea while enjoying stunning ocean views.
Our final stop is at the Santa Iria Viewpoint, offering one of the most dramatic coastal panoramas on the island. From this vantage point, you can take in the rugged cliffs, rolling green hills, and the vast Atlantic Ocean, a perfect way to end this incredible journey.
This tour offers a unique blend of volcanic landscapes, history, and cultural immersion, taking you deep into the heart of São Miguel’s most impressive natural wonders. With our expert guides, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation of the island’s geology, traditions, and breathtaking scenery, making this a truly unforgettable adventure.
