Explore one of São Miguel’s best-kept secrets—the breathtaking region of Nordeste, often called the “10th island of the Azores” due to its remote location and unique landscapes. This tour takes you through stunning viewpoints, lush mountains, and historic villages, offering an unforgettable journey through the island’s most untouched and picturesque areas.
Our adventure begins at Salto do Cavalo, the highest point of the Furnas crater, standing at 805 meters above sea level. From here, we take in spectacular panoramic views over Furnas, Povoação, and, on clear days, the distant island of Santa Maria.
We then make our way to Povoação, the oldest town on São Miguel, first discovered in 1432. Traveling along the north coast, we are surrounded by breathtaking views of rugged cliffs, rolling green hills, and the endless Atlantic Ocean—a landscape that will stay with you forever.
Arriving in Nordeste, we explore its charming historic center, a peaceful village surrounded by lush mountains and vibrant gardens. Here, we take a break to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch, experiencing the authentic flavors of the Azores.
After lunch, we visit some of the island’s most spectacular viewpoints:
- Ponta do Sossego & Ponta da Madrugada – Two of the most breathtaking sunrise viewpoints on the island, famous for their lush gardens, colorful flowers, and panoramic ocean views.
- Vigia dos Barcos Viewpoint – Overlooking one of São Miguel’s oldest fishing ports, offering a glimpse into the island’s maritime history.
As we make our way back towards Ponta Delgada, we stop at:
- Vigia das Baleias Viewpoint in Algarvia – Once used by whalers to spot their prey, this viewpoint now serves as a peaceful spot to admire the vast Atlantic Ocean, reminding us of São Miguel’s whaling history, which ended in the 20th century.
- Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park – One of the most magical places on the island, where cascading waterfalls, historic windmills, and lush greenery create a fairytale-like setting and a perfect ending to our adventure.
As we return to Ponta Delgada, we reflect on a day filled with stunning landscapes, hidden gems, and rich history. This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore Nordeste’s untouched beauty, leaving you with unforgettable memories of São Miguel’s most breathtaking landscapes.
