Embark on a breathtaking journey through São Miguel’s most iconic landscapes, where volcanic craters, emerald lagoons, and lush mountainsides come together in a perfect harmony of nature. This full-day tour will take you through the Sete Cidades caldera and the majestic Lagoa do Fogo, offering unforgettable panoramic views and a deep dive into the island’s natural and geological wonders.
Leaving Ponta Delgada, we begin our adventure towards the west of the island, making our first stop at the Pico do Carvão viewpoint. Surrounded by a mesmerizing mosaic of green pastures and dense forests, this spot offers a first glimpse into the island’s volcanic evolution and dramatic landscape changes over time.
Before descending into the crater, we stop at Vista do Rei, a legendary viewpoint where you’ll witness the iconic twin lakes—one blue, one green—a true masterpiece of nature formed by volcanic activity.
We then enter the heart of the caldera, heading towards Cerrado das Freiras, a peaceful spot where you can appreciate the tranquility of Sete Cidades’ shimmering blue-green waters up close. Here, take a break and enjoy a delicious traditional Azorean lunch at a local restaurant, experiencing the flavors of the island.
After lunch, we continue our journey towards the northern side of the island, stopping at the charming town of Ribeira Grande. With its 17th- and 19th-century architecture, this city offers a glimpse into the Azorean past, blending history with vibrant local culture.
Next, we visit the Ponta do Cintrão viewpoint, a mandatory stop for its breathtaking ocean views. This location once served as a whale-watching post, reflecting the rich maritime history and former economic significance of whaling in the Azores.
Finally, we reach the peak of Pico da Barrosa, where the majestic Lagoa do Fogo unfolds before us. This protected Nature Reserve since 1974 is home to rare endemic plant species, crystal-clear waters, and unparalleled panoramic views stretching across Lagoa, Ponta Delgada, and Ribeira Grande. The lagoon’s striking blue and green hues create a surreal, almost dreamlike setting—one of the most iconic sights in the Azores.
