The Lagoa do Fogo Volcano is a true natural wonder, a picture-perfect postcard that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. As one of the largest lagoons in the Azores and the second-largest on São Miguel Island, this breathtaking site has been a protected Nature Reserve since 1974, preserving its pristine beauty and rich biodiversity.
Our journey begins in Ponta Delgada, following the south coast towards the city of Lagoa, where we make our first essential stop at the renowned Vieira Ceramics Factory. Here, you’ll witness the fascinating artisanal clay production process, from raw material to the final handcrafted piece, known locally as the famous “Louça da Lagoa.”
As we ascend the Lagoa do Fogo mountain, we are surrounded by lush green pastures and vibrant wildflowers, typical of the Azorean landscape. Along the way, we enjoy panoramic views of Lagoa, Ponta Delgada, and Ribeira Grande, before reaching the breathtaking summit, where the famous Lagoa do Fogo awaits—an unforgettable sight of crystal-clear waters nestled in a volcanic crater.
Continuing towards the north coast, we offer an optional stop at Caldeira Velha Natural Park, a paradise of endemic flora and soothing thermal pools with water temperatures reaching 38°C—the perfect spot for a relaxing dip in nature.
Next, we arrive in Ribeira Grande, where we take a brief stroll through the historic city center and, for those interested, a tasting of the region’s traditional liqueurs.
Before returning to Ponta Delgada, we make a final stop at the famous Santa Bárbara Beach, a stunning black sand beach that hosts a stage of the World Surfing Championship.
As our tour comes to an end, we leave with memories of São Miguel’s breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and unique flavors, making this an experience you’ll never forget.
